Newcomer to the fore ...
A few observations about this year's event:
-This year saw 22 entrants battle through 29 games over the course
of the two-day event.
-The crop of new players nicely complemented the returning "hardcore"
A&A players.
-Compared to 2006, this year there were fewer conceded games
(12 vs 9), but more games were played without a bid (11 vs17).
-When a bid was actually used, all but one game had the bid going
to the Allies (Axis- 1, Allies- 11).
-The Victory Territory (VT) scoring system in use at WBC seems
to warrant an Allied bid.
-In the "Quality Games" statistics, the approximate
1 round difference in the length of the average Axis win versus
the average Allied win was more a product of individual game
circumstances than any concerted effort by Axis players at "stalling". Many
of the pertinent games (Axis wins) had players that hadn't played
any kind of A&A tournament game before or hadn't played the
A&A Revised Edition in a tournament setting.
-While three of the four SE participants were returnees from
last year, it was the relative newcomer that took the title.
-My use of random pairings in all three preliminary rounds brought
about the unexpected (but possible) occurrence of having undefeated
players that wouldn't advance into the SE rounds. The matching
of like records (as much as is possible) in the second and third
rounds would have taken care of the situation and this change
will be implemented next year.
Raffle prizes were given out to tournament participants during
each round of the first day.
