2005 Century Survey Results

To no one's surprise, the 2005 Century survey set a record for most votes cast - an expected development inasmuch as the number of games each member could select was doubled from five to ten to compensate for the fact that not only the last ten Century events, but also the 25 Continuing Trial slots were at stake. However, the number of members renewing during the Annual Membership Drive also increased 9% over 2004 and the percentage of those members who actually caste votes increased greatly as participation in the event selection process dwarved that of prior years.

The bar was raised accordingly with the number of votes required for Century admission more than doubled to 144 from last year's 65. Only two new games (Sword of Rome and St Petersburg) were admitted to the Century as eight culled events were readmitted. However, the new Continuing Trial selection process admitted a third new entry as Pirate's Cove joined 24 returning Continuing Trials. All in all, 222 games received at least one vote, up 26 from 2004 but down 30 from the record 252 of 2001. One thing seems certain ... the time of the write-in candidate is past ... with no game not on the ballot finishing in the top 50. Those wanting new events need to ensure that they are on the ballot in the future and that means making a GM commitment before December.

These results only establish the eligibility of events for the 2005 WBC. As usual, failure of a GM to make a commitment to the event by Feb 28th will void its eligibility. Such events will be replaced by other events with a GM commitment at the Board of Director's discretion. At this time, it is likely that Diplomacy will not be run at the 2005 WBC in which case Attack Sub will likely be elevated to replace it in the Century and Age of Napoleon will likewise be admitted as the 25th Continuing Trial. In addition, a number of new Trial events are expected to be added by Sponsors and Vendors as the February 28th deadline approaches.

BPA thanks all of its members who participated in this year's Membership Drive and thereby helped select the 2005 slate of events.
