Attendance Surges For Pro Golf

For the second year in a row, this Trial event saw a surge in attendance, as we grew by 19 entrants to a new record total of 93 golfers. The annual spectacle that is the Skins Game final being contested off the ballroom stage continues to entice a few more people hoping to be able to conquer the ultimate WBC game of skill.

After assistant GM Rob Drozd’s PowerPoint demo session, the field gathered in the Snowflake Forum, where 2018 champion Harry Flawd was awarded his BPA green jacket for winning last year’s event. Likewise, 2018 PBeM champion Sean McCulloch was also awarded the slightly less prestigious PBeM green jacket. After two minutes of detailed instructions by the GM, the players then scattered to various rooms and bars to contest the Pebble Beach course in hopes of qualifying for the championship Skins game.

For the third year in a row, the best score was an 8 under par round of 64, this year turned in by Thomas Medeiros. Two other players, Natasha Metzger and Blair Morgen, advanced to the Skins Game with a score of 7 under par: Mark Yoshikawa was the fourth finalist at 6 under par, beating out fifth place John Coussis in a tiebreaker. Sara Ward’s 5 under par was good enough to earn her sixth place laurels and the virtual sand plaque.

The four finalists moved to the Grand Ballroom, where the greatest spectacle in WBC sports occurs: tossing the big green fuzzy dice off the stage. Joining them were their caddies (to read their cards and retrieve their dice), some family members and friends, and a couple of dozen others participants of the 19th hole who chose to watch while enjoying their libations.

Mark Yoshikawa started off the scoring, when the other three golfers all parred hole #2. Needing only a birdie to earn two Skins, Mark took no chances and instead drained an eagle putt for the early lead Natasha Metzger earned two Skins of her own on the fourth hole with a birdie, as only one of the other three golfers were even able to par the hole.

Thomas Medeiros made it a three way tie for the lead when he equaled Yoshikawa’s feat of eagling the sixth hole while his three competitors could all do no better than par. Holes seven, eight and nine were all halved, with Yoshikawa providing the visual highlight for the event. He attempted to put a little extra “English” on one of his die rolls, lost his footing and fell on his derriere. Please search Youtube for the video clip.

The tenth hole was now potentially the decider for the tournament. Medeiros had honors, and immediately proceeded to birdie the par four. After Metzger and Morgen failed to halve the hole, the pressure was on Yoshikawa to keep Medeiros from winning the event. When his long birdie putt fell short, a new Pro Golf champion was crowned.

While Thomas Medeiros claimed the one and only plaque in the event, Natasha Metzger claimed second place laurels by out rolling Mark Yoshikawa in a tie breaker. Yoshikawa was awarded third place while Blair Morgen was forced to settle for fourth place laurels.

Be sure to join the fun again in 2020, when we shall again play Augusta National and the new larger print golfer cards will return for those of us with older eyes. The best way to prepare is to get in a little practice during the 2020 eleventh annual PBeM tournament which should start in April (during the month of the Masters).
