May The Force Be With You

In the third year of play of Star Wars Miniatures at the WBC there weren't as many as there was a while ago. However, it is still the most popular Star Wars game produced since the theme first appeared A Long Time Ago. Of those that participated, almost all were already familiar with the game and most did not expect that the randomly selected squads would include the variety provided. They also did not expect to see squads with so many extremely rare characters.

This tournament was conducted similar to a game store booster tournament, except participants were not required to purchase boosters or anything else. The GMs provided all materials required to play the game, Minis, Cards, Maps, Dice and handouts.

In this event, players qualified for Single Elimination play by winning games in the preliminary round. Players could enter one or more of the four heats of the preliminary round without limit. Players were paired randomly in the first preliminary heat. Thereafter, the GM's matched opponents with like records whenever possible during succeeding heats.

In the first heat, Vinny Sinigaglio scored the highest in the heat with 158 points playing an Imperial squad with Darth Vader. Aidan Powers finished second with 153 points playing an Imperial squad with Darth Vader's Apprentice Unleashed.

The second heat saw David Brooks playing an Imperial Squad with Emperor Palpatine score 175 points against Rich Phares who was victimized by Bruno's play-by-play chatter. Rich had Old Obiwan, but remarked that Old Bruno ruined his morale. Alex Gregorio had the second highest with 157 points playing an Imperial Squad with Darth Vader, Champion of the Sith.

In the third heat, Buddy Sinigaglio scored 160 points with a Republic Squad boasting Obiwan, Ahsoka and captain Rex. Jacob Hebner played a Republic squad with Plo Koon and Stass Allie and scored 150 points.

The fourth heat saw Jonathan Schoose playing a Separatist squad led by General Grievous Droid Army Commander and scored 153 points. The next highest went to Seamus Paravda who scored 152 points with a Republic Squad led by Mace Windu.

The eight players above minus Seamus Paravda advanced to the single elimination with seeding based on their performances in the heats. Graham Buccheri moved up as an alternate with Seamus missing due to conflicting playoffs. After the Round of 8, the survivors included Alex Gregorio, David Brooks, Buddy Sinigaglio and Jonathan Schoose.

In the first semifinal, Alex drew an Imperial Squad with Darth Vader Unleashed and Dengar Bounty Hunter to go against Buddy's Rebel squad with Luke Skywalker Champion of the Force and Han Solo Scoundrel. Alex advanced due to the nasty Vader with a Force Grip 40, but the Coup De Grace was administered by a Nightsister Sith witch with a force Lightning blast on Luke.

In the other semifinal, Jonathan played an Empire squad with Darth Vader Sith Lord and Mara Jade taking on David's Rebel squad that included Old Obiwan, Ferris Olin and Dash Rendar. This game went to wire with the Imperials prevailing.

The Championship Game was an awesome affair with many twists and turns between Alex’s Rebels and Jonathan's Imperials. On turn 4, after much maneuvering, Alex sent Han and Luke to close with Vader in an attempt to polish him off quickly. Han, with a twilek spotter hit Vader for 50 damage, but Vader deflected the shot. Now the twin shot will get through as long as Han doesn't roll a 1 on a 20 sided die, which of course he does. Luke does his attacks well, but they are not enough, as Jonathan weathers the storm.

Later on turn 4, Grand Moff Tarkin moves within 6 spaces of Vader granting him triple attack. Vader does not miss even one slash and kills Han in one turn. On the last roll of the turn, Alex recovers when an Elite Hoth Trooper deals a critical hit worth 50 points damage to Boba Fett Enforcer.

Two turns later on Luke, Vader and Boba Fett were all that remained of 14 pieces. Alex used Luke to kill Vader with 80 points damage in an amazing sequence, a critical hit worth 60 points damage followed by a successful flurry attack that ended the Dark Lord. Alex needed Luke to survive Boba's shot to get a last chance to win, but Jonathan did not miss, dealing just enough damage to put Luke away.

Congratulations to Jonathan Schoose for winning the Star Wars Miniatures Plaque.
