Ave Imperator Fred Bauer!

Perennial contender and AREA’s second ranked Fred Bauer crushed his opponents in several rounds of play to end Ron Draker’s three year Caesar reign and become the new champion of Julius Caesar. To win, Fred defeated not just the three time champ and highly skilled block war gamer Ron Draker, but also the third and fourth ranked players. It was certainly a well-deserved victory!

This year we only had 12 players for the tournament, a significant drop from previous years. Nonetheless the top players were all there except for the co-designer and seventh ranked Justin Thompson who arrived after the start of round 2. A total of 17 games were played in the form of three Swiss rounds with a cut to the top 4 single elimination matches. Bids were made to play Pompey, the favored side, averaging 2.3 extra levies for Caesar in his first card play. Interesting enough, the new champion Fred Bauer played Caesar vs first and third ranked players, receiving 3 extra levies and winning each match conclusively.

In Fred’s semi-final match against Sosa an elite Caesar archer unit twice took down Pompey’s mighty elephants in critical battles for Africa. His final match against Ron came down to having the right cards and playing them at the right time. Julius Caesar is a game were skilled players can read the intentions of each other and play timely event cards to cancel their enemies plans. Sometimes you can get very unlucky, such as Ron having three Jupiter cards played against him by Sosa, but usually the games become tense back and forth affairs. When you have the same small group of players making the top four every year though, something other than luck is involved!
