Nary a Laurelist in Sight ...
The Monday night heat drew the best with 20 tables tying the record for a single heat. The Thursday at 5 heat did surprisingly well with 19 tables. As expected, Friday’s early morning wake-up call was the least attended session with only ten tables and eight new players. The other 39 were trying to get into the semifinals for one last shot at the fabulous prizes donated by our benefactor John Jacoby. The Tuesdy night heat drew 15 tables for a total of 64 preliminary games. Those generated 13 multiple game winners, with two of those winning three heats. To make the top 25 you needed to win your first heat played and take a fifth in another heat. And even then you were tied for 27th. However, we only needed three alternates to fill the semifinals, which shattered any previous record by a mile. The 33rd seeded player made the semifinals and actually won laurels with a sixth place finish.
The most common complaint I get year after year is how hard it is to make the semi-finals if you don’t win in your first heat. All I can say is keep playing and try to win in two later heats. This tournament has yet to be run without using alternates to fill the semifinals so its not like its unobtainable.
The semifinals weren’t as close as last year. Ben Scholl won his semi by a whopping 26 over Nicole Yuhase, a newcomer who had done well in other tournaments. Kevin Wojtaszczyk won his by 15 over Patrick Shea and by 19 over 3-time champion Alex Bove. Chad Martin won by seven over 2011 champion Richard Meyer. Ryan Romanik, another newcomer, also won by seven over the new Pirate captain, Jason Fisher. In the closest semi, Steve Boone was only four better than another Pirate, Barrett Straub and by 14 over 2-time champion Steve Scott. Barrett picked up 6th place laurels by virtue of being the closest runner-up.
So, with all past champions eliminated, Ra was assured of a new champion for 2015. To take that one step further, none of the finalists had even made it to the Final before. Although several of them had impressive laurel totals, they had zilch in their Ra columns. Ryan Romanic was up to the challenge and held off prominent WBC competitor Kevin Wojtaszczyk to claim his first ever RA championship and the first of two shields he’d carry home from his first WBC. |
