One of Five ...

Nick Henning is the first Automobile 2-time champion. Of course, he is also the first winner of five tournaments in one WBC, so perhaps this is just one of his lesser achievements.

The tournament set a new attendance mark with 50 participants in two heats. The players continue to be a mix of sharks from the past (all four previous champions lurked), people who just enjoy the game and newcomers who sit through the demo and join in to play their first game.

The highlights of the first qualifying heat were the tie game between defending champion Romain Jacques and 2013 finalist Jack Jung (won by Romain on a tiebreaker) and the only two 5000+ scores of the event (by Tom Bissa and Kelly Krieble).

By the second heat, the players were hitting their stride, with the average winning margin over 350 points. The highest scoring game, with three players between 4650 and 4910 points, saw Rod Spade reach the semifinals and Dave Metzger shut the door on Romains' attempt to sweep the qualifying games. Dave's 4750 score was good enough to reach the semifinals without winning a game, along with Bill Burch's score of 4440.

In the semifinals, Lewis Lin and Greg Ziemba had relatively easy wins, both scoring the only 4000+ scores at their tables. The other two games saw tougher battles, with Dave Metzger squeezing out a 10-point win over the defending champ in one game, and Nick Henning holding off Tom Bissa and Jack Jung in a 50-point win with all three players between 4230 and 4470 points.

The finalists showed no favoritism selecting their characters. Lewis Lin chose to be Henry Ford in two games, with the rest of the players selecting a different character each time. All used conservative strategies. No player other than Metzger ended a turn with more than five loss cubes. On the last turn, all the players ended with no unsold cars. Nick was able to produce in all three classes in Turns 2, 3 and 4 and ended with a score of 4620. Greg was second with 4120. Lewis and Dave formed the trailing pack with 3580 and 3540 respectively.

The most popular player selection throughout was Charles Howard with his extra 2 car sales (chosen 63 times), followed closely by Walter Chrysler (59 selections) to facilitate late round shenanigans. Alfred P. Sloan received the fewest player selections (half the number of picks as Howard). However, he definitely came through for the winning players throughout the heats. Half of his picks were in the Final round by the player who went on to win the game.
