Noisy, Raucous and Distracting ...
"Bidding by the seat of my pants -- allow me to demonstrate!"
That is the motto of our new champion, Mark Smith. Was this Can't
Stop with roving bands of hecklers? Or Liar's Dice
with "Kiss 'em Goodbye" serenades? Or Slapshot
with unruly whiners sent to the Penalty Box? No ... this was
that stately Euro pure strategy game. The highlight of the tournament
was the semifinal match wherein Medici newcomer, Mark
Smith, met the defending champion, Josh Githens. Josh would painstakingly
think through the value of the perfect bid. After he verbalized
it, Mark would instantly respond, "Now that just sounds
too low! I bid one more." At the end of the first round,
with a severe card shortage in effect, Josh ended without a single
card! That just never happens, and to happen to the defending
champion is rare indeed.
Easily amused and rallying the rest of the table, Mark was amazed
that Josh still earned points, even without any cards, tying
for second in one pyramid. In fact, the five players at this
table had so much fun, and made such an uproar, that even the
Liars Dice players at the neighboring tables - traditionally
no shrinking violets themselves - were distracted enough to investigate
who was making such a commotion. Out of consideration for the
nearby liars, we moved the Final to another room.
Mark advanced to the Final over second place Jason Arvey by a
convincing 20 points. Only two of the three semifinalists would
qualify for the Final so the margin of victory was important.
The second semifinal boasted the only two players who had won
both heats. Rich Roberts handed Fred Minard his only defeat,
and just barely got the win by a mere two points over Anthony
Lainesse. Both Rich and Anthony would therefore advance. The
last semifinal was also taken more serenely. Steve Shambeda prefers
to force card shortages, and used this to his advantage in a
3-point win over Carmen Petruzzelli. Both would advance.
In the Final, undefeated Rich Roberts was the "serious"
favorite. Nevertheless, Mark Smith with two wins and one second
place was the not-so-serious second place seed. He wasn't about
to take this game any more seriously than his previous games.
He patiently let the other players bid each other up for cards
while announcing by the seat of his pants, "Now that bid
just sounds too high!" He was left at the end of the bidding
with the leftovers. Spending a total of 1 point for his boat,
he flipped himself the 10-gold and high boat. At the end of the
first round, Mark had 76 points and a 19-point lead. Taking high
boat again in the second round, Mark maintained his lead throughout
the game, winning by 19 over Carmen Petruzzelli.
Interestingly, Carmen was the only finalist who had not won a
game, ending the day with three runner-up finishes. Rich Roberts
took third to go with his previous three wins. Playing by the
seat of his pants, Mark Smith wound up with three wins and a
second. When asked what his secret to winning was, well just
ask him yourself. Mark is just too happy to demonstrate!
