Thrice as Nice
The 2010 Race for the Galaxy event ran as two heats,
with players having the option of playing two games in each heat.
Heat 1 kicked things off with a big crowd. About half chose to
play the Basic Game, and the other half opted for the first two
expansions. Brink of War was not used because it was so new.
Heat 2 was popular as well as the event fell just one player
short of breaking the century mark for the third time in as many
years. Advancing in the tournament was simple in theory, not
so simple in practice: Win a game.
All winners of a Preliminary game qualified for the Elimination
Rounds, which consisted of single elimination play until a champion
was crowned. 33 winners from the 58 Preliminary games advanced
to the Quarter-finals. These were randomly seated into nine games;
six 4-player and three 3-player. All games in the Elimination
Rounds played with the first two expansions, but without takeovers.
Rob Renaud served notice that the two-time champion meant
business when he won his game overwhelmingly with a score of
75 and the best the opposition could muster was 35, 28 and 22.
Nick Page also had a strong Quarter-final game winning 49 to
31 to 27. In contrast, the closest Quarter-final found Dave Platnick
edging Charlie Hickok by a single point: 56 to 55. Dave then
defeated Nick and Kevin Garber in the first semi-final 44 to
39 to 28. Rob swept into his third Final winning 41 to 35 to
21 over Christopher Ellis and David Finberg. The third semi-final
saw an upset win by Peggy Pfeifer who defeated Pei-Hsin Lin 37
to 35, with Aaron Fuller coming in third. Pei-Hsin had charged
through the heats and Quarter-final crushing all opposition,
only to fall a bit short in the semis.
In the three-player Final, Rob Renaud got off to another strong
start and never looked back in securing his Three-Peat with a
score of 54 to Dave's 34 and Peggy's 30.
