GM Jim Vroom's four-legged Table markers get high points for originality.

A short playing time probably requires more heats to be Century material.

A Work in Progress ...

The rats returned to the WBC in 2009, and 36 brave souls tried mightily to prevent them from spreading the plague through the streets of Paris. Two heats were run and eight intrepid adventurers were advanced to the semi-finals. Table 1 consisted of Pierre-Luc Thiffault, Anne Norton, Daniel Eppolito, Doug Faust and Cary Morris. Table 2 boasted Nick Page, Beth Zhao, Martin Sasseville and Anni Foasberg. The winners and runners-up from each table advanced to the Final.

The Final saw Nick Page, Beth Zhao, Cary Morris and Doug Faust venture forth in the shadow of Notre Dame cathedral. It was a quick and spirited contest that saw Doug Faust emerge victorious with 77 points. Cary followed with 73 points, followed by Nick with 65 and Beth with 61.

Here are some comments from the players:

Doug: " I had all my cubes by Round 4 and had seven gold by Round 3. I used the Minstrel to move three cubes from the bank to the hospital to save me from the rats in Round 4 and used the Minstrel again in Round 5 to move cubes from the cloister to the park. This gave me six cubes in the park, which provided three extra points each time I scored. After that, I went to the victory point building and scored four times."

Nick: "I had a rough time controlling my rat population as the cards for the Hospital were at the bottom of my deck and also the decks of the players to my left each round."

Beth: "I found parks were the way to go to score points. This worked pretty well for the winner, but not so well for those of us who were unable to get cubes into ours."

Cary: "My strategy was getting cubes through use of the Monk and using my car as often as possible to get the message markers. I ended up getting five of them."

Thanks to all who played Notre Dame this year. 36 people is a good number for most conventions, but with such a short playing time, it needs more players to survive at WBC. If you enjoyed the tournament and would like to see it back next year, please vote for it in the December membership drive as I doubt it will be back as a vendor sponsored event a third time. Jay has too many other new games to promote.

The rats will be waiting for you!

Interlocking boards vary with the number of players.

Geez ... I know those French rats are tough ... but a helmet?
