In the Year of the Dragon was one of five new trials sponsored by Rio Grande Games this year. That attracts the curious but doesn't give players much time to study the games.

GM Keith Levy, President of Games Club of Maryland, plays a big role in spreading interest in new Euros both as a GM and driving force behind the Sampler Showcase.

Fast Playing Mayhem ...

In the Year of the Dragon is a quick playing game in which the players must cope with one disaster after another and manage their resources to lessen their losses as opposed to building an empire. Quick play was indeed the order of the day as the two heats generated a total of six games played, yielding five winners who proceeded directly to a Final. The sixth winner, Geoff Pounder, bowed out and was awarded sixth place. The whole thing was over in three hours. The five finalists began as follows:

Robb: Warrior, Doctor. Person Track Position: 9
Rod. : Warrior, Famer.   Person Track Position: 9.
Tom.  Monk, tax collector.  Person Track Position: 9.
Rob: Doctor, tax collector.     Person Track Position:  7
Jessica:  farmer, tax collector.  Person Track Position: 7

Turn 1:
Tom takes dragon shield and purchases a large scroll for six wan.  He hires a Sr. medicine man.
Rod takes rice and hires a Jr. warrior.
Rob takes a roof hires a Jr. warrior.
Jessica takes money and hires a Sr. medicine man.
Rob takes a firework and hires a Sr. medicine man.

Tom was first to buy a double privilege and raced to an early lead.  Rod did likewise on Turn 3 and achieved first turn order early, then held it until the last couple of rounds.  Because of this, he never had to tax. and tax collector was the last card he played. Meanwhile, Tom became cash poor and lost track of preparing for the devastation of the Imperial Tribune . He had four palaces and as many people but found himself without $3 and was beat to the rice space with a famine approaching. He lost four people and three palace layers to a single disaster. He ended up homeless with no people and was only kept in the game by his drgaon shields and fireworks.

Final Score:
Rod Spade 105, Rob Effinger 98, Rob Kirchner  83, Tom McCorry 78, Jessica Crandall 74

I will not be returning to GM this event in 2009 so if you want it to come back, step up and volunteer.
