Semi-finalists battle for the Jacoby prizes in the foreground.

The finalists gather under the watchful eye of GM Steve Scott.

Always a Crowd

Another strong turnout for RA occurred in 2008 as it posted its seventh straight year in triple digits and its second highest attendance as 145 would-be Pharoahs vied for the coveted sceptor of power. If it wasn't for a disappointing Saturday morning heat, it would have set a new attendance record for the event. The experiment of moving the Tuesday heat to Saturday failed as only five newbies appeared to join 27 returnees for a total of seven undermanned games. The surprise heat was Thursday at 3 PM where 83 participants played 17 games. The attendance for the four heats  were 12-17-12-7 games respectively.

Ten double winners left 38 winners in the hunt to advance. I was surprised that only 22 of the 38 appeared for the semi-finals. A welcome minor miracle also occurred when only three alternates appeared to make a perfect 25 for the semi's. The 25th semi-finalist whose highest finish in any heat was 3rd place was actually ranked 94th. So anyone who had at least a 2nd or a 3rd with a winning margin of 4 pts or more would have made the semi's. That just goes to show once again that if you want to advance you should always check and not assume you have no chance.

There were, however, numerous players who did relish the opportunity. The semi-finalists included three past champions. Alex Bove was the only one to reach the Final. Eric Freeman advanced by showing the highest sun in a dead heat with Jean-Francois Gagne who earned 6th place laurels by virtue of his near-miss. I'm not sure he was that disappointed as he took home one of the fabulous prizes donated by John Jacoby, the GM of Circus Maximus. John has been donating prizes for three years now and says look out for next year. Brad Sherwood won his game by one point over Lyman Moquin. Greg Thatcher and Winton Lemoine won their games by eight and 19 points respectively to round out the finalists.

The Final was a well played game with Alex Bove prevailing by five points over Winton and six over Eric. Alex joins Tom Dunning as the only two-time champions of RA in its nine-year WBC history.
