Besdies the competition, the big draw at WBC is the chance to renew acquaintances with regular attendees and play folks from different groups or even regions. This game matches WBC regulars from four states: DE, SC, FL and OH.

Carl Sykes, Laurel Stokes, Luke Koleszar and David Fritsch enjoy Round 1 play. Union Pacific has been a popular, quick Single Elimination event without resorting to multiple heats for years but has inexplicably suffered from smaller fields the last two years.

All Aboard

We had 44 players  yielding eleven 4-player games in the first round.  The winners plus the top five runner-ups advanced.  There were a number of excellent games, with the closest semi-finals being won by Steve Shambeda over Jeff Senley 129-127, and Mark Guttag edging John Wetherell 122-120.  The other two finalists were Jed Shambeda and Jim Carvin.

The Final might have been billed as "family feud" as the Shambeda's, father and son deuled each other in the presence of Mark and JIm.  A late 1st pay train found Steve ahead with 17 (5 stocks), Jed and Jim with 14, and Mark trailing with 11.  The second dividend round had Steve extrendeing his lead to 47, Jim 39, Jed 38 and Mark at 28.  Steve also took the lead in Union Pacific cards.

In the third round, Steve made an unprecedented error, and admittied it ( according to Jed).  This was the closest pay turn with the four players maintaining their positions by scorring 33 and 32 points each.

Mark played the spoiler busting monopolies in Orange , Brown and Grey in the last two rounds.  Steve made a quick move to take second in Green as the fourth round began.  It proved to be the game winning move.  The dividend card came out quickly and the final difference was the six points Steve got for 2nd in Green instead of Jim.  Steve won 122 to JIm's 112.  Without the lossof Green, JIm would have won the wood 118 to 116.

Players seemed to like the "public money" scoring method used by the GM. and we will play it that way in 2008
