New to the Battle

It's not easy being the new guy in town but Worthington Games made an impressive initial showing with their fast playing series of block games and their newest release mustered enough of the curious to put on a fine little tournament.

Mark McLaughlin would win a hard fought victory over Barry Smith using the Americans in the Yorktown scenario to capture redoubt #9 from the British. The tournament started with 14 players battling it out in Quebec. Barry Smith would battle Gordon Stewart to the end at Quebec to advance while Mark McLaughlin, Brian Smith, Joe Harrison, Mike Nagel, Ted Drozd and Matt Daly would all make it to round 2 via Oriskany. At Oriskany McLaughlin would eliminate Daily to advance. Barry would win the battle of the "Smiths" at Oriskany by eliminating Brian to move on to Round 3. Cowpens would be the scene for the next round. Drozd had an opportunity to knock off Smith's British dragoons at Cowpens but would miss on nine consecutive rolls. This left Ted's militia vulnerable and Barry would swoop in to finish off both the militia and Ted.

That brought us to the championship round, with Yorktown being the scenario that would crown the winner. Mark took the role of the Americans trying to capture redoubt #10 from Barry's Redcoats, while Mark was the British in redoubt #9 trying to hold out against Barry's French force. Both players would attempt to manuever their light infantry around the forts. Barry made a dash into the redoubt with his French light infantry, but being unsupported they were quickly eliminated. Mark, showing a little more patience, would advance steadily before finally overwhelming Barry's defenders for a late game victory. The Napoleonic Wars designer and GM who "never plays in tournaments" can no longer hide behind that claim - he now has wood!

Congrats to Mark and Barry after fighting their way through a tough field of competitors that included game co-designer Grant Wylie, as well as Gordon Stewart, John Haba, Joe Harrison, Matt Daly, Stan Hillinski, Kosta K., Sean Vessey, Ted Drozd, Brian Smith, Mike Nagel, and Brian Bradley.

A big thank you to all for making our first tournament a memorable one!
