War of the Horticulturalists ...
This
being the first time I GM'd this event there was much debate
at each table over some changes. This is a good thing ... it
being a political game! Despite running one less heat, turnout
remained steady at 28. Players had two heats to advance to a
final on Saturday. They advanced if they possessed a "sole
King" or by most votes in Parliament. We played seven prelininary
games to qualify with four players qualifying with "sole
Kings".
The final on Saturday evening was the slowest game played throughout
the competition. Justin and his ally placed a clamp on the board
and the rest of the board could not overcome the early advantage.
The others did not trust or coordinate enough to crown another
King. Able to vote down any proposal, many offices remained in
the chancery. The late hour added to the frustrations of the
alliance's ability to break the hold that Justin commanded on
the board.
Well played Justin! He gave a performance worthy of today's politicians.
Huzzah.
I will be making some adjustments to next year's format based
upon player feedback. They include beefing up the ambush option
and prohibiting Royal Heirs from leaving England to name just
a few. The random end seemed well recieved and will be back.
Thanks to Justin and other players that helped get me through
my first GM experience.
Finalists (left to right): Peter
Melinn, Justin Thompson, Kevin Brownell, defending champ James
Coomes, Scott Stewart, and Bill Powers pose for posterity.
