wargaming Euro style
I am
one of those few who believe that Attila is one of the
most unappreciated games in the Euro genre. The game is primarily
a simple game of influence and hand-management, but the strategy
can be quite subtle and people who "get it" do consistently
well (witness our repeat champion this year).
The Round 1 games saw a close win by Edward Kendrick, and
a blowout (20 points!) by Steve Brooks. Four players advanced
to a final, where we used my set which replaces the player tokens
with differently colored cubes, so that there's less of that
"green goes up two in green" confusion. Steve Brooks
graciously accepted the pink pieces.
The first scoring was fairly even, as usual. Matt triggered
the second scoring and opened up a three-point lead over Steve,
with John and Edward trailing by nine and eleven points, respectively.
Edward closed the distance in the third scoring round, but Matt
still held first or second influence in a number of tribes. With
a lock on the yellow tribe, John ended the game with a double-double
card play, using his double play token to place two yellow tribe
markers each, triggering enough conflicts to end the game (and
pump up the yellow score). Unfortunately, he still fell five
points short of Matt, who himself bested Edward by one point
for the win and his second WBC wood.
All in all, it was a relaxing, "getaway" event for
those not involved in the many finals/semi-finals that traditionally
predominate Sunday.
