Acquiring Civilization ...

The rules for this event will be slightly different from the standard Hans im Glueck (Tigris & Euphrates) and Mayfair versions of the game. In the first round only, the first and second players will make one action instead of the usual two. In all subsequent rounds all players take two actions like normal. All other rules are the same as printed.

The schedule will allow players to learn and participate in an entire event in just one evening. On Saturday, the second heat will be preceded by a demonstration, and immediately followed by the Single Elimination rounds. In addition, a heat earlier in the week will allow players an additional chance to advance.

Players will probably need to win only one game to advance. If there are 32 or more players, 16 will advance.

Priority in advancing to the second round will be as follows:

1. Players who win their first game.
2. Players who win their second game.
3. Players who finish second in two games.
4. Players who finish second in one game.

Within groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 above, ties will be broken in the following order:

1. Total result in two games played
2. Players who brought a game
3. Best percentage of total composite** score in any game.

** Composite score for each player calculated by ((lowest*50 + 2nd-lowest)*50 + 3rd-lowest)*50 + highest

If there are less than 16 players who have won or finished second in at least one game, the semis will consist of less than 16 players with players being randomly assigned to tables.
