Meeples wobble, but they don’t fall
down…
A clever tile-laying game. The southern French city of Carcassonne
is famous for it’s unique Roman and medieval fortifications.
The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their
followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters and in
the fields. The skill of the players to develop the area will
determine who is victorious. Carcassonne is considered
one of the “gateway” games that opens the world of
boardgames to many new players and spawns many sequels and imitators. Settlers
of Catan and Ticket to Ride are frequently cited as
the others in the Euro genre.
The big news in 2007 is a drastic change in format from four
heats of multi-player Class B MESE to a Single Elimination ,
two-player Class A event. One might well wonder why mess with
a format which has consistently yielded among the largest fields
at WBC?
Originally, the plan was to send the final winner
to Essen as the USA representative to the Carcassonne World
Championship. The
Carcassonne World Qualifier at Essen is run as a single
elim, two-player game. Although it didn't work out, we are adopting
the format to remain in position as an official qualifying site
for the World championship. Besides, it's nice to have a
major Euro event that can be played to conclusion in one day
on the final weekend of WBC and provides competition for weekend
visitors.
