Iron Meeples Prevail in Tiebreaker To Capture The Title!

For the Fifth straight year, the Team Tournament Champions had a goose egg from one member but managed to overcome the field. Fortunately for them, their closest rival also had one. In a dead heat, Iron Meeples and Uncivil Servants each had a repeat win for 7 points (Grant LaDue/Kevin Youells), a new win for 8 points (Kevin Wojtaszczyk/Ty Hansen), 1 point from another member (Bill Peeck/Chris Trimmer), and a 0 (Laurie Wojtaszczyk/Ewan McNay) to tie at 16. Based on the points for number of players in their chosen games, The Iron Meeples finished at 16.207 with Uncivil Servants at 16.105 to Crown Iron Meeples the 2023 Team Tournament Champions.

The Top Ten saw only 1 of the top 5 teams as The Harry B’s finished fifth. Three other of the top 10 teams crack the top 10 with Uncivil Servants second, Space Ghost Coast to Coast ninth, and St Paul’s Rejects tenth. The Longest shot at 9000-1, the Chaos Magiants overcame the odds to finish sixth. The rest of the Top Ten were The (Eu) Gene Pool (third), Team Delaware (fourth) The Old Dominion Knights (seventh), and Greenville Mafia: Clippers (eight).

No team had more than 3 members score this year. Nine teams had 3 members score including 6 in the top ten. Eight teams had 2 players score including fourth place Team Delaware and Chaos Magiants. Fifteen teams had 1 member score including 1500-1 odds Greenville Mafia: Clippers in 8 and Saint Paul’s Rejects at tenth. Only 11 of the 43 teams ended with no one scoring team points.

The big movers against the odds were Chaos Magiants up 37 spaces from #43 to #6 , followed by Greenville Mafia: Clippers up 33 spaces to eighth and The (Eu) Gene Pool up 31 spaces to third. The highest-ranking teams to plummet were Golden Goose Egg down 38 places to last, Greenville Mafia: Peaches down 23 spaces 23 spaces to next to last, and The Siegelmen down 22 spaces from fourth to twenty sixth.

Predicting wins was down with 8.5%, compared to 9.5% in 2019, of our field (15 entrants) managing to successfully predict their win with 8 of those achieving it in an event they had not won before. Overall, a total of 47.1% of the participants managed to place in the top 6 of their events, up from 34.2% in 2019. Kirk Porteous proved to be the best earing 10 points for The (Eu) Gene Pool followed closely behind by Pete Morzinski of Greenville Mafia: Clippers and Fadi El-Riachi of Chaos Magiants contributing 9 points to their teams.

With only 1 of the top five and d 4 of the top ten ranked teams finishing in the top ten of this year's tournament, the Bracket Busting Contest was up for grabs for our 31 participants. Is 50% a good percentage, Chris Bizzell and Chris Meyer think so. For the second tournament in a row, our bracket winner managed to pick 5 of our top ten finishers but would force the convention director to dig past the first tiebreaker to determine the winner as both picked only one of the teams in the correct place. Therefore, the second tiebreaker was needed (who picked the lowest ranked team that finished in the top ten) to crown this year's Bracket Busting Contest winner. Chris Bizzell, successfully picking 43rd ranked Chaos Magiants, edged out Chris Meyer, who correctly picked 17th ranked Iron Meeples, to become this year's Bracket Busting Contest. Nine others successfully picked 4 teams in their bracket. No one picked more than 1 team in the correct position with only 5 entrants achieving this feat. Congratulations to Chris B on earning his 2023 Sustaining membership.
