Ten minutes to learn, a lifetime to master.

Ingenious is an abstract game by designer Reiner Knizia. The Ingenious tournament has been a staple of WBC for over a decade. All ages welcome. Players place two-sided tiles on the hexagonal board and earn points by matching colors. Players must place tiles strategically as to maximize their own points and prevent opponents from scoring too high. When players reach a score of 18 in any one color, they immediately take another turn. The winner is the player with the highest low-score out of the six colors.

In this tournament, 4-player games will be the default with 3-player games used only as necessary. Each round will last one hour; the GM will adjudicate games that have not finished by the end of the hour by deciding the best position on the board in his opinion. There will be no appeal from the decision so do not play slowly.

16 players will advance from three heats to the elimination rounds (semifinal and final). Due to the popularity of the game, playing in more than one heat is encouraged if you want to advance. There is no penalty for playing in multiple heats, so join us!

You will score points based on your place at the end of each game. First place will receive 7 points, second place 2 points, third place 1, and nothing for finishing in fourth. The more points you accumulate over the course of the convention, the greater your chance of advancing to the semifinals. Tie-breakers if needed are:
(i) most wins
(ii) most seconds
(iii) average score across all games played.
[After that, a die roll, but that's REALLY unlikely!]

The GM will post a list of qualifiers and alternatives for the elimination rounds after the conclusion of each heat so check the kiosk regularly to see where you stand. The event has been won by a 32nd alternate, and it is likely that some alternates will be needed in the second round, especially as this is being scheduled opposite Slapshot for those who would like a quieter end to Saturday. However, to cover all eventualities, if fewer than 32 players participate in the heats, the number of semifinalists will be equal to half the number of heat participants. If this number or the number of players who appear for the semifinals are between 12 and 15, there will be four semifinals of 3-4 players each. If the number is between 9 and 11, there will be three semifinals of 3-4 players and a 3-player Final. If the number is between 6 and 8, there will be two semifinals of 3-4 each and the top two in each semifinal will advance to the Final. If the number is 5 or fewer, we will move directly to a final and the fifth-rated player, if any, will be relegated to 5th place. If a player who qualifies for the Final chooses not to play, the remaining finalists will play.

Ingenious is a perfect game: it's short, tense, and challenging. The problem is there are **NEVER** enough copies at the tournament. If you have a copy, PLEASE bring it. If you do not have a copy, buy it before WBC! The GM does not want to turn away any geniuses because there are not enough games.

RULES NOTE: This year, the tournament will use the rule given in some editions that the game immediately ends if one player achieves a perfect game (i.e. reaches 18 - an Ingenious in all six colors).

Feel free to email the GM with any and all questions.
