2017 Tournament Format century event HMW

Players compete in auctions for Egyptian provinces and then use actions to improve their provinces with farms and pyramids. Once per round, players sacrifice to Amun-Re with the hope of gaining rewards for their generosity. Halfway through the game, the Nile floods and provinces are swept away, only to be fought over again in the New Kingdom. Players must make careful bids, use cards wisely, and build pyramids efficiently to win.

Play will consist of three preliminary heats. Advancement into the semifinals will be based on the WBC's HMW (Heats Most Wins) system with GM tiebreakers. It is likely that all game winners will advance; however, in the event more than 25 winners are present, players will be ranked according to the guidelines below. Alternates (those taking at least one second place) will be used only if necessary to fill the field to 16, 20 or 25.

  1. Most wins
  2. Best non-win finish (i.e. a player with a first and 2nd place finish advances ahead of a first and no second, two 2nds advance ahead of a single second or a 2nd and a 3rd, etc.). In 4-player games, only 1st and 2nd place finishes are ranked. In 5-player games, 1st through 3rd place finishes are ranked.
  3. Die roll

Seating for the semifinals and Final will be in rank order seeding. Semifinals seating will have the highest ranked player at Table 1, followed by the second highest player at Table 2 and continuing until the tables are full in the 16-, 20- or 25-player format. The Final will be a 5-player game. If only 16 semifinalists in four games compete, then the four winners and closest runner-up (by score differential) will advance to the Final. In the case of a tie between runners-up, standard Amun-Re tiebreakers will be used to determine who advances.

In any potential 4-player games (heats or semifinals), each individual game will draw and expose the three unused provinces. Regardless of the exposed provinces, there will be no other changes in play and all power cards will be considered playable as designed.

Rule clarifications:

  1. Items in both Phase 3 and Phase 5 should always be performed in the same order: cards, farmers, and then bricks.
  2. When drawing cards during the purchasing phase (Phase 3) or as a reward during the sacrifice (Phase 5), each player must state in advance how many cards will be drawn. Players are allowed to look at their cards before deciding how many farmers and/or bricks to purchase/receive.

A note on deal making:

Players may neither agree in advance to "share" the bonus points for pyramid-building, to make/change particular sacrifices, etc., nor engage in other forms of collusion/coercion. If a player(s) is found to be attempting to coerce another player, they will be disqualified from advancing to the next round regardless of game outcome. As this may be a subjective policy, the GM and Assistant GM's must unanimously agree such an infraction warrants disqualification.
