2013 WBC Team Tournament—The 22th Run for the Slivers
July 24
, 2013

History | How Stuart Tucker's Odds Are Calculated | Registered Teams | Odds

The TEAM tournament is now CLOSED for new submissions. Can you pick the top 10?
If you have preregistered for WBC, watch your email inbox for instructions on entering the Bracket Busting Contest and winning free BPA membership for 2014.

TEAM TOURNAMENT: Teams are composed of any four players pre-registered as a team. Each team member must select a different event as his official game. Team members and games may change only during pre-registration. No changes may take place on-site. In case of conflicting entries, the last version received was official. All team members had to be registered for the convention (or hold applicable BPA membership) by July 20.

All Team Points are awarded automatically when the GM turns in the Winner’s Claim for an event (see the Points Schedule). A bonus point will be awarded to everyone who earns team points in an event that they have previously not won. The team that gains the most points is the winner. The number of entrants in each team’s events is the tie-breaker.

BRACKET BUSING CONTEST: All pre-registrants will receive an email invitation to participate in the bracket busting contest with the final teams and odds shortly before WBC begins. Join the fun and win a free membership next year by picking the most Top Ten teams.

Scoring: To improve the speed with which the standings are updated, Team Member, whether they score a point or not, should post their point totals on the Team Tournament kiosk Standings Board as soon as they are known. The Point Schedule is listed in the printed program. Those who score points in an event they have never won will receive one bonus point. While the self-service scoring is unofficial and subject to verification, it allows attendees to gain a current sense of where they are in the standings as the week unfolds. Since the results of some events are not known until the very end (and later) of the convention, the official scoring will be done the following week and posted here. Each member of the winning team receives a Team plaque and is memorialized on the website and in the Yearbook. The winning team will receive a plaque at the 2014 convention.

Handicapper Stuart Tucker Predicts Nest of Spies Win
July 24, 2013

Jeff has reinvented the wheel and overrated Magic Men. What was he thinking? My odds drop them out of the top 10, with Nest of Spies resuming their rightful place at the top of the list. Although our lists aren't tremendously different. Three other teams that my competitor underrates are Forgot Our Team Name, We Ain't Dead Yet, MIT SGS, and notably Consulting Firm, which come in ninth on my list and 23rd on his. Anybody who leaves Consulting Firm out of his or her Bracket Busting list is making a serious mistake. These young men have shown serious strength over the past few years. Of course, only the end of next week will tell which handicapper and Bracket Buster gets it most nearly right. Watch your email for instructions on entering the Bracket Busting contest and winning BPA membership in 2014.

*NOTE: Team 94 was added after odds were calculated. The entry was postmarked before the deadline. Thus, it is eligible for the team tournament and may be included in the Bracket Busting predictions.

Magic Men Holds in the Edge in Final Oddsmaking
July 21, 2013

Our final count is 93 teams, with 20 new teams added this past weekend. The odds are updated to reflect the final list, as more and stronger teams came on board than originally modeled. Thus,l the odds of winning for all previous teams have gone down. (I've provided background information on how I calculated these odds and on the unclaimed free agents.)

Leading the list of new entrants is team Avenel Hill Game Co. This team ranks 21st on the full list of 93 teams. Team Avenel Hill Game Co is led by Andy Gardner who is seeking his 6th title in Victory in the Pacific.

After all the calculations and odds are done, defending champion, Magic Men, remain the team to beat. Everyone should know what to do when you come up against them in competition. Your targets are Randy Buehler in AGE, Andrew Emerick in NVG, Sceadeau D'Tela in EGZ, and Edward Fear in COB. We are all rooting for upsets.

Bonus Points Could Determine 2013 Team Winner
July 19, 2013

With 17 more teams signed up, there are now a total of 73 teams with rankings.

Four teams from Greenfield South Carolina registered at once. Their "A team" is clearly team War which is now ranked in the 8th spot overall. This team is led by John Emery who is seeking his seventh win in Up Front. Josh Githens, Bill Beckman, and Brian Collars round out this veteran team.

Almost making the top 10 ranking is team Philly Streets consisting of Aran Warszawski (AGE), Ben Scholl (DOM), Haim Hochboim (AGR), and Jon Senn (PRO). They earn dark horse status and special mention because they are the highest ranked team that has no player competing in an event he has won before. In fact, they are the only team out of 73 that have 4 players who have won events before, yet nobody defending a previous title. Phily Streets is even more intriguing in that 3 of the 4 teammates are competing in an event that another teammate has won before. My guess is that they have all been coaching each other on how to win these games, and they all may now be equally competitive. Winning an event they have not won before would earn them an extra point each. We will see if this strategy pays off for them in the actual competition. Had they all entered an event they had won before, they would have moved up one place in the forecasted standings into 10th place.

With many new teams entered, the free agency pool has turned over considerably. The new Free Agent Fantasy Team consists of Rob Beyma, Harald Henning, Raphael Lehrer, and Mathieu Pare-Paquin. If these four were to form their own team and play in their best events, they would rank second in the team odds list.

Team submissions are still coming in. Don't wait too long to submit yours! (Use the 2013 WBC Pre-Reg Flyer or the Online Team Submission Form or send the information in an email to conventiondirector@boardgamers.org.) The deadline is midnight, US Eastern Time, on Saturday, July 20.

Check the WBC forums on BoardgameGeek and Consimworld, our Facebook group, or our Preregistration page to find those who are looking for teammates. (You can hurry and recruit the top free agents, as well.) Don't forget! ALL team members must pre-register (as adults, NOT juniors) for WBC to be eligible for the competition.

Dr J Identifies Most Likely to Exceed Expectations
July 17, 2013

New teams ranked in the top 10 are two very competitive and experienced teams: Polish Lancers at 8th place, and Ski Patrol at 9th place. Ski Patrol may even be stronger than their stats suggest. Mikaela Kumlander is the only newcomer in the top 24 teams. Fear Mikaela in the 18xx tournament! Her talented teammates picked her for a reason.

After the selection of 40 free agents onto 10 new teams, the new top ranked Free Agent Fantasy Team is now John Emery, Ken Gutermuth, Raphael Lehrer, and Mathiew Pare-Paquin. If actually formed, this team would tie Magic Men as the top ranked team.

At the bottom of the team rankings is Team Good, Bad, Ugly and Evil. These are all newcomers from Europe flying in to play at their first World Boardgaming Championship. With no prior WBC laurels or wins, they come in lowest ranked at 6000-1 odds. However, they are this oddsmakers bet for most likely to exceed expectations.

Team submissions are still coming in. Don't wait too long to submit yours! (Use the 2013 WBC Pre-Reg Flyer or the Online Team Submission Form or send the information in an email to conventiondirector@boardgamers.org.) Cornett Updates Odds and Identifies Free Agents
July 8, 2013

Having doubled the number of registered teams, we now have a new leader in the forecasted team rankings. Defending champion, Magic Men consists of a nice collection of all stars in Randy Buehler, Andrew Emerick, Sceadeau D'Tela, and Edward Fear. Interestingly, all four are relatively new to the WBC, having only started coming to the convention within the last 3 or 4 years. As individual players, they consistently score high in average laurels and average events won per year. As a team, defending champion speaks for itself.

Nevertheless, there are serveral other strong contenders that could easily win the team championship, including many other teams yet to register.

Speaking of teams that have not yet registered, if the top 4 free agents (Dave Metzger, Riku Riekkinen, Curt Collins II, and Ken Guermuth) joined forces and formed their own dream team, they would become the top rated team at WBC, surpassing even Magic Men. These are all consistently successful gamers. (Download the list.)

Perhaps more intriguing is that if any combination of the top 55 free agents formed a team, they would be a top 10 ranked team. For instance, even near the end of the top 55 list, a top-10 team could be put together consisting of Dennis Nicholson, Steven Lewinter, Tom DeMarco, and Bob Heinzmann.

So, it's not too late to put together a very competitive team. (Use the 2013 WBC Pre-Reg Flyer or the Online Team Submission Form or send the information in an email to conventiondirector@boardgamers.org.) Of course, many of these presumed free agents are already committed to teams that have not yet submitted their roster. However, many of these players are truly free agents sitting on the sidelines wondering if anyone will ask them to the big dance.

The Early Line

I know it seems early. You have just wrapped up somebody’s school year, and haven’t thought about your team yet. But let’s face it, the odds are already stacked against you this year (just take a look at the projected top 15 teams this year--my apologies to the name changers, I’m doing this long before I see the entries). Your team, no matter how inspired, must still overcome these old hands. Unless Hoover breaks up the consortia that make up the top teams, the rest of us must look to gimmicks for a chance. Don’t bother entering the likes of For the People. Try instead a really big game where the reward will put your team out in front. That’s what helped the Magic Men to victory last year! Don’t settle for a top ten ranking by playing in the tiniest of events and hoping to score four times; you’ll still fall short of the top (you know who you are--time to step up to the plate in real events!). Let’s all take hope from the fact that, yes, indeed, it is possible to win Slapshot twice. Thank you, Derek, you give hope to the masses!

I’m not quite ready to put the Finns on this list of the top 15 teams going into the summer. Maybe next year. I’m still waiting for a sustained breakthrough. Speaking of which, bring back Blitzkrieg--I love those 8-4-4 units!

I’ve noticed an odd-year/even-year betting split. Ignore it at your own peril. Go with Uncivil Servants over Roll One Die. Also, after a year in which the “Me” obviously failed his 3 Stiffs, look for a turnaround performance.

But, hey, you can always try to bribe away some of the top players. It is draft season, after all. Make them offers they can’t refuse. Shake things up. Let’s see how many of these early favorites can be pushed below the line by player moves! I’m sure most of them think they are the crucial link on their team anyway. They can win without their oldtime mates. Offer them a keg, a celt, or a key to the city.

That about wraps it up for my tips on breaking the odds. But if you’ve been paying attention over the years:  don’t bet the long shots. If their odds go into triple digits, they have as much chance of winning as a GM who wants a favor from the Con Directors after forgetting to submit their After Action Report. Even Happy knew the Magic Men were in the upper half last year. And just because Don is giving out bonus points, that doesn’t make Greenspielers a contender. (Ask a veteran if he’s playing a new game for his team or sticking with his polished one. Yeah, leading with your inexperience isn’t recommended.)
