2002 WBC PRELIMINARY WINNERS LIST

Making allowances for some Event lists which were never turned in, this year's WBC preliminary results still generated winners from 24 states or countries, with 18 double winners and five successfully defending champs plus a slew of first-time winners. Dave Metzger of Glen Allen, VA pulled off a "Hebner" with a grand slam of his own with wins in Across Five Aprils, A House Divided, Pacific Victory, and War of 1812. This grand slam comes with an asterisk however as Metzger defeated only 48 opponents in the sparcely attended quartet. More impressive was Jeff Cornett of Sanford, FL whose triple wins in Euphrat & Tigris, Napoleon and Robo Rally came at the expense of 125 other players. As for young Rebecca, her fame caught up to her - managing only a second in Titan: The Arena. Replacing her in the child prodigy category was 10-year-old Alan Sudy who bested 100 adults to finish third in Settlers of Catan.

Five participants extended winning streaks to 4 or more years (finishing first in any event qualifies for the list): Bruce Reiff (12), Ken Gutermuth (7), Charles Hickok (5), James Pei (5) and Steve Okonski (4). Three had lengthy winning streaks snapped this year: Steve Packwood (8), Bruce Monnin (6), and John Coussis (4).

As usual, more details will be forthcoming as soon as we can update the website. GMs are reminded that their 400-word event reports are due by September 7th. Email them to doncon99@toad.net.
