One of the objectives of the BPA Board of Directors is to give the membership greater visibility into the deliberations of the board and to give insight into the things being discussed. To that end, we are publishing a quarterly “Tenth Chair” update so that everyone has a better sense of what’s going on with the board and the deliberations we are undertaking for the convention. This article details board activities from October to December 2024.

Seven Springs Co-ordination

The board continues to support Ken as he continues to work with Seven Springs to improve the experience for our members. In particular we are working with the resort to improve food and beverage options, implement temporary changing tables in the washrooms without them and lighting improvements in Winterberry.

New Treasurer

Unfortunately, this fall our newly appointed treasurer had to step back from the role for personal reasons. As a result, the board has begun a new relationship with Patricia Flemming, a professional CPA firm based out of Hickory NC. The board is still seeking to resolve the treasurer position on the board but is excited about this new relationship to ensure timely and accurate accounting of our accounts.

Tech Committee

Work continues on the website and database development with Process Specs completed. In an effort to ensure an effective launch, the first new feature is expected to be live for our membership registration on April 1, 2025. The tech committee is happy with the work done by Gravity Works so far and is looking forward to the April launch.

New Auction Format

As a result of significant membership feedback, the board decided to make a change to the auction and auction store format for 2025. As an effort to match the desire of some members to maximize tournament time against others that enjoy the existing auction and auction store, the board has moved the auction to a similar, but shorter format for 2025. Gaming will begin on the convention Tuesday at 2pm rather than 6 with compressed timeslots for the auction and auction store while still allowing for the same format as 2024.

Legacy Games

The board considered 8 games for Legacy status in its 2024 deliberations. Games are considered if they met minimum player counts in the previous WBC, were not in the Century for the next WBC, and had been an event that met minimum player counts for the last 10 consecutive years. Only 1 of those games considered received the necessary 2/3 votes from the board but we are excited to add Ace of Aces to the list of WBC’s legacy games.

Affirmation of Tournament Structures

There were multiple tournaments at WBC 2024 that did not follow some of the GM guidelines and tried to offer inappropriate results as a consequence. The board will put greater emphasis on ensuring that GMs are aware of the guidelines and that all tournaments in 2025 will comply with them. In particular the following points will be emphasized:

  • Players who rejoin a single elimination tournament as an eliminator are not eligible to advance in the tournament, even if they win their “eliminator” game
  • No tournament using heats will advance more than half the field to the elimination rounds of the tournament

Continued Commitment to Engagement

The Board is commited to continuing to take a more active role in communicating over Social Media throughout the year. We are continuing to commit to answering questions asked in the WBC specific forums on ConSimWorld, Facebook, and BoardGameGeek. If you are not comfortable publicly asking your question, you can also contact us through email to Ken directly at conventiondirector@boardgamers.org or to the entire board at bod@boardgamers.org.
