TEAM TOURNAMENT: The first 47 horses are in the starting gate at http://boardgamers.org/wbc13/teamtour.htm. Get your team entered and study the early racing form for our annual Bracket Busting contest. Can you beat the Happy Handicapper this year? This year we have spiced up the competition with dueling oddsmakers as Jeff Cornett has provided a rival racing form packed full of data to guide you in your picks. See http://www.boardgamers.org/downloads/freeagents2013-0712.pdf. Don't procrastinate! Enter your team now by mailing in your pre-reg form or simply sending an email to conventiondirector@boardgamers.org. All pre-registrants will receive an email invitation to participate in the bracket busting contest with the final teams and odds shortly before WBC begins. Join the fun and win a free membership next year by picking the most Top Ten teams.

AUCTION LOTS LISTED: The limit of 550 lots for this years Auction was filled in record time. No further items will be accepted for this year's auction. However, items are still being accepted for the Auction Store until Saturday, July 20, at midnight eastern time. Unregistered items will NOT be accepted. Get the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/auctionoverview.htm. A full list of this year's Auction lots can be found at http://boardgamers.org/wbc13/auctionlots.htm.

WBC OPEN GAMING & PRE-CONS: Open Gaming space has been expanded again for WBC, but PLEASE be aware that NO OPEN GAMING SPACE is available prior to Monday. Those arriving early for the Pre-Cons should plan on other diversions. You may be able to find a free table during the Pre-Cons, but we cannot guarantee it. The space is not ours until Monday. Our Pre-Con space is reserved exclusively for tournaments.

Similarly, those non-Tribune members whose plans have changed and will now be attending during the Pre-Cons should be aware that their badges will not be valid or available until the date specified. If you'd like to play early, PLEASE advise us at conventiondirector@boardgamers.org as soon as possible so that we can save you time and money by having your badge pre-printed accurately.

HOMECOMING: It is only fitting that in the year when WBC hosts Avalon Hill's 15-year reunion following the sale of AH to Hasbro, that original Avaloncon and VIP GM Glenn Petroski makes his return to WBC. Welcome back the AREA head at this year's Rising Sun Pre-Con.

BOARD ELECTION ENDING: This year's election of directors to three-year terms ends at midnight EST on July 15th so just hours remain to vote. The results will be announced on Tuesday at 3 PM in Lampeter Hall of the Lancaster Host during our Annual Meeting at WBC.

LATE CHANGES: As they say, 10% never seem to get the memo. Or to misquote another famous line: "Deadlines? We don't need no stinkin' deadlines!" Be that as it may, these "better late than never" types beg your indulgence for their tardiness and ask you to direct your attention to their late event changes:

  • Battle Cry has posted its tournament scenarios at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/bcypge.htm
  • Napoleon has updated a link at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/nappge.htm
  • Other events posting updates since the original previews went on line include: Medici, Maria, Superstar Baseball, History of the world, and Thurn & Taxis. If you are interested in these events and have not seen their previews since the initial posting, you may want to revisit them.
  • A number of demos have been added since our program went to press. You can note them in our rotating projected schedule in the Showroom and in the WBC Primer email sent to all pre-registrants the week before WBC.

WBC LODGING: Lancaster Host is sold out for most nights, but due to late cancellations has nine rooms to sell; four of which are handicap accesible with but one double bed. Inquire toll free at 1-800-233-0121. BPA also has group rates at the nearby Continental Inn across the street. The Continental offers bargain rates and free hot breakfasts when you ask for the World Boardgaming Championships group rate. Although the Continental deadline has passed, they still have limited rooms available. Get the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/hotellan.htmThere are many other hotels in the area - some within walking distance - ranging in price from $48 to $259 on hotelroom.com. You can also check for roommates and rides at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/prereg.htm.

JUNIORS: In keeping with the family-friendly atmosphere of Lancaster Host (which is adjacent to Dutch Wonderland amusement park), WBC again slates a full schedule of Junior events from Tuesday through Saturday and a great pool. View them at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/jnrpge.htm.

WBC MONSTERS: The usual "monster" game setups in the lobby will receive reinforcements this year as the huge Devil's Cauldron/Where Eagles Dare will make an appearance side by side with its marathon playing brothers - starting Sunday night and running through Saturday. Attendees are urged to step forward to assume commands for long or short periods. Players are reminded that setting up such long and huge games ad hoc for an extended period in the Open Gaming Showroom is not allowed and that permission must be gained before setting up for extended displays. To volunteer to take part, contact Matt Fagan at wayward@optonline.net.

WBC PRE-REGISTRATION FORM: The 2013 WBC Pre-Reg form and accompanying information is now posted at http://www.boardgamers.org/downloads/prereg13.pdf. Current members who have already purchased Sustaining or higher level memberships need not pre-register UNLESS they want to register their team for the Team Tournament (the earlier the better please - especially if you have a new team name), upgrade to Tribune level to attend pre-cons, or order any of the numerous souvenir and apparel items. However, the four-page folder contains much information on WBC so be sure to check it out anyway.

REGISTRATION PAGE OPENED: WBC's Pre-Registration page is open for business at http://boardgamers.org/wbc/prereg.htm with the first 1,000 attendee commitments logged in. Use this page to check the status of your registration, troll for teammates, rides or roommates, or even Open Gaming matches or baby sitting gigs. Send your requests to Aconventiondirector@boardgamers.org.

SOUVENIR SHIRTS: The widest assortment of WBC Souvenirs and apparel ever offered with the BPA embroidered logo was available to order at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/souvenirs.htm for pickup at WBC. The men's and ladies jackets and duffle bags are no longer available since they had to be pre-ordered by June 15th, but the WBC official silk-screened T-shirts and special Tie-Dye versions are still available for pre-order through July 20th. Supplies of these items for sale on site will be extremely limited so if you want one, better email us to hold one for you COD at conventiondirector@boardgamers.org.

ALLIANCE DISTRIBUTOR'S SAMPLER SHOWCASE: Three more games have been added to Alliance Distributors' Sampler Showcase demonstrations of the latest game offerings the industry has to offer in Wheatland on Tuesday. Village, Tzolk'in and Lords of Water Deep have joined the previously announced caste of Bora Bora, Cinque Terre, Island Fortress, Keyflower, Kings of Air & Steam, Terra Mystica, Yedo and CO2. The mentors will be Tom McCorry's merry crew of 'splainers John Corrado, Jim Vroom, Keith Levy and Mike Fitzgerald. We could use more 'splainers so if you'd like to teach a game on Tuesday, let us know. See the details at http://boardgamers.org/wbc13/sampler.htm.

LIBRARY INVENTORY UPDATING: Donations of new games are pouring into the BPA Game Library. The center piece of the Showroom's 13,000 sq ft Open Gaming Dinner Theatre made over 1400 recorded game loans during WBC Week in 2013 and an even bigger assortment of the latest games is expected in 2013. See the continually updated inventory as it grows ever larger at http://boardgamers.org/wbc13/library.htm.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE NIGHT: The popular steakhouse located directly across Route 30 will again be hosting a fundraiser night to benefit the BPA Gaming Library on Tuesday, July 30th from 3 to 10:30 PM. So, if you're not an Auction follower, plan on eating early Tuesday with their $7.99 specials (before 5 PM) and enjoy your best meal of the week before the tournaments start again on Tuesday night. Check out the menu at http://www.texasroadhouse.com/restaurant-locations/pennsylvania/lancaster. Submit the Texas Roadhouse ad from your program and 10% of your bill will benefit the upkeep of the Game library.

WBC PROGRAM ON LINE: A colorized version of the 2013 program containing the complete alphabetical and chronological schedule is now posted on line. Unlike the black & white print version distributed at WBC, the various categories of events are color coded as an aid to quick recognition and is worth downloading and printing for the easiest reference. It can be found at http://boardgamers.org/wbc13/schedule.htm in both color and black & white versions. An assortment of other versions for applications such as Google Calendar will be up soon. View the details of your favorite events and then plan your schedule using Steve Okonski's Personal Scheduler at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/sviewer/ in an improved format. You can also find additional scheduling aids by Steve at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/schedule.htm - for the ultimate in planning your week at WBC.

2012-2013 YEARBOOK: The most recent version of the WBC Yearbook is posted online for download at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbook12/print/. Qualifying members who renewed their Sustaining or Tribune memberships by the required deadline may pick up a copy at WBC registration in New Holland. A limited number of additional copies will be available for sale on site for $10.

PBeM NEWS:

YOUELLS WINS ADVANCED CIVILIZATION: Kevin Youells overtook defending champion Mads Lunau in the closing turns to win the second ACV PBeM title over a field of 28. Eight 7-player preliminary games qualified eight finalists for their third and final game. Other laurelists were Kevin Worth, James Gundy, Romain Jacques and Gregory Kulp. See the details and updated laurel totals at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbook13/acvpge.htm.

NICHOLSON WINS PRO GOLF: Dennis Nicholson has won the most recent Pro Golf lottery .... er, tournament, over a field of 48 dice rollers, besting last year's defending champ, Mark Yoshikawa. Who says there's no skill in Pro Golf? Oh yeah, me. Debbie Gutermuth, Mike Pacheco, Grant LaDue and Sean McCulloch also added to their laurels in the latest dicefest. Anyway, all the details and updated laurel totals are available at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbook/pgfpge.htm#pbem.

BAR UPDATE: The BPA Battles of the American Revolution (BAR) PBeM Tournament that began in late 2012 has completed two rounds and begun a third. Brandywine was played in the first round by 22 participants with woeful results for the Continentals as the Brits won all 11 contests. 18 refought the battle of Germantown in the second round and the results were much different with the Americans winning 5. The third round is underway at Oriskany where the Americans are holding Fort Stanwix and awaiting relief as the Brits, Joseph Brant and many Indian tribes besiege the garrison. So far, 14 have entered all three rounds. The first six rounds are open rounds, which means open to all without regard to prior performance. BAR designs are rich with historical “chrome.” Join in. Go to http://www.ohiovalleygamers.org/boarpbem.html.

WAR AT SEA X TO START: GM Bruce Monnin has scheduled a five-round Swiss Tournament with 2-month rounds to commence September 1st. Six finalists will then advance to SE play. Get the details at http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/bpa_was_pbem.htm.

All BPA PBeM tournaments require current BPA membership when the event starts. All multi-day paid attendees to WBC are current BPA members for the balance of that calendar year. Associate Calendar year memberships enabling play in all PBeM events starting in that year cost only $10. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a PBeM event. Players may join the BPA throughout the year. See the BPA Terms page for details.

BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved. See the requirements to host a BPA email tournament at http://www.abovethefields.com/top_pbem/
