The Reign of James Pei as Caesar was put to an end by first time Caesar, Michael Dauer. Michael proved you can be the top BPA performer while demonstrating good sportsmanship as he adds this award to his previously announced 2017 Sportsman of the Year award.

His 168 laurel performance was fueled by his prowess in card-driven war games. Michael earned wins at WBC in Here I Stand and The Napoleonic Wars. He supplemented this with a a thrid place finish in Paths of Glory. This WBC performance left in third place for the WBC Consul award.

Michael added a third place finish in Here I Stand to earn the laurels necessary to pass Consul winner Richard Meyer in one of the closest races in recent history. Michael defeated Richard by 4 laurels

Rounding out the top six BPA competitors for 2017 were Consul winner Richard Meyer, Nick Henning with his second consecutive 3rd place finish, Bert Schoose, former Caesar James Pei, and Ricky Boyes. Only nine of last year's Top 25 players managed to retain that top billing led by James Pei who, alone among all BPA's Top Dogs, has managed to remain in the Top 25 for each of the past ten years with 2006 being the last time he failed to make the Top 25. Others able to retain their Top 25 standing in 2017 were Michael Dauer, Nick Henning Bert Schoose, Ricky Boyes, Ed Menzel, Richard Beyma, Keith Dent, and Curt Collins II. First time WBC attendee Allian Jiang proved to be someone to watch as e placed eleventh.
