2009 Caesar Award Stefan Mecay

Stefan Mecay, in only his fourth year of WBC competition, won laurels in eight tournaments to claim the Caesar title with a staggering 295 Laurels in the 2008 season - nearly doubling the score of runner-up and past Caesar, James Pei. He ran up a huge lead during the year before WBC began by winning two large email tournaments (Paths of Glory and Twilight Struggle) in the Card Driven games that are his specialty, padded that lead further with two wins at WAM and for good measure took a 4th at Enlightenment. In truth, it would have taken a record-setting WBC performance to overtake him even if he did not play at WBC. But he scored another 60 laurels by winning the Paths of Glory Pre-Con and then coasted to his fitting at the toga emporium. Despite his overwhelming total, Stefan can't lay claim to sole BPA leadership however since he finished well down the list in WBC statistics for Consul honors for laurels scored exclusively during WBC week.

Rounding out the top six BPA competitors for 2009 were James Pei, Ken Gutermuth John Emery, defending Caesar Alex Bove and Curt Collins II in that order. Only seven of last year's Top 25 players managed to retain that high ranking in 2009 led by ex-Caesar James Pei who rose from 13th in 2008 to 2nd this year. Ken Gutermuth, Alex Bove, 2007 Caesar Raphael Lehrer, Chris Byrd, Kevin Wojtaszczyk and Ewan McNay all managed to retain Top 25 status another year also while18 new names graced the leader board.
